Fiber is a type of carbohydrate (sugar) that provides no calories by itself. Its function is to help them form the stool form and consistency, also sequesters dietary cholesterol that is not absorbed in the intestine.
The high-fiber diet can help with problems of constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis and irritable bowel syndrome. Adequate intake of fiber may help prevent heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
It recommends eating daily between 25 and 30 gm. fiber. Most people consume less than 10 gm. of fiber per day, so you have to increase it gradually. Increasing fiber intake is very important to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day to prevent constipation.
