Professor Elio Riboli, from Imperial College London, said: “We were surprised to see that the size of the waist have a powerful effect on people’s health and premature death.

“There are many simple and individual characteristics that may increase a person’s risk of premature death in this measure, regardless of smoking and drinking.”

He added: “The good news is that you do not need an expensive test and wait ages for the result and evaluate this aspect of health is as simple as measuring your hip and waist size. (more…)

Children Obesity

The neck arteries in obese children and adolescents, have a look similar to people age 45 years, according to research presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2008.

A saying goes: “You are as old as his arteries”, which means that the state of your arteries is more important than their actual age in the evolution of heart disease and stroke, “said Geetha Raghuveer, professor of pediatrics at the University Kansas City Missouri School of Medicine and cardiologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

“We found that the condition of the arteries of these children is more typical of a person 45 years of age, when someone their own age.”

The researchers used ultrasound to measure the thickness of the walls of the neck (carotid) arteries that supply blood to the brain. (more…)

Obesity in Children

In the past two decades, the number of overweight children has increased dramatically. Common diseases are found in middle-aged adults, such as type 2 diabetes, gallstones and liver failure, are now common in children. These children, aging prematurely, are showing symptoms of hypertension, breathing disorders, sleep problems and bone and joint complications.

Over a third (34 percent) of children in the U.S. and ages 6 to 19 are overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. These children are at greater risk of developing heart disease and cancer. Obesity in adulthood may be more severe weight problems before age 8. Type 2 diabetes (formerly known as adult diabetes) accounts for up to 45 percent of new diagnoses of diabetes in children and adolescents. And, unlike juvenile diabetes (type 1), type 2 diabetes is associated with weight. (more…)

Obesity and smoking

Much of obesity is related to the risk of heart disease and stroke and to a lesser extent cancer.

Among middle-aged people in the UK, as one in four deaths are caused by heart attack or stroke, and one in 16 cancer deaths are due to overweight or obese, according to researchers estimate.

Fat at 40:

In adulthood, it may be easier to prevent substantial weight gain, to lose weight once you have won, they say.

Thus the body mass index (BMI) was calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared, an example would be:

Normal: 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: 25 to 29.9
Obese: Above 30

It is very important to calculate your BMI, to avoid excess in middle age, which could add years to life. (more…)

There are about 18 million type 2 diabetics who are considered to have at least two to three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to non diabetics.

However, type 2 diabetes often leads to heart disease and other conditions before killing the general strike, Alzheimer’s disease, in the 70s.

Dr. Ralph Nixon, University of New York, vice president of the Alzheimer’s Association’s scientific advisory board, states that the genetics are still the main risk factor for dementia. (more…)

Obesity Health Risks

The health risks of obesity are serious and even fatal, heart disease, such are the number one cause of death in the United States and can be directly linked to obesity, these are the risk factors related to it:

Diabetes Type 2

Type 2 diabetes and obesity are directly related to the extent that over 85% of people diagnosed with it also overweight. Type 2 diabetes begins when the body does not respond properly to insulin, a hormone released by the pancreas.

Heart disease

Obesity is a major risk factor in relation to heart disease and heart attack, taking at least 20% or higher incidence in overweight people.

Stress incontinence

Excess weight, especially in the abdominal area, puts additional pressure on the bladder, which is motivating this discomfort incontinence or leakage of urine. (more…)
