Truths and lies about fat consumption

Contrary to popular belief, fats are not responsible for all the ills that our body can suffer, quite the contrary, some are essential for this to work properly.

We should not totally eliminate fat intake since they form cell membranes, collaborate in the formation of tissues, possible hormone production and other chemicals, part of the digestive process and transport vitamins through the body.

Lipids (as its scientific name) are made up of substances called fatty acids are divided into groups according to their particularities.

Saturated fatty acids, resistant to environmental degradation, are considered harmful because they increase the synthesis of cholesterol and cardiovascular problems. They are present in milk and dairy products, sausages, meat, palm oil and copra.

Unsaturated fatty acids are not considered harmful. There are two subtypes. Mono-unsaturated protect the arteries by lowering cholesterol and are malignant in olive oil, peanut, goose fat and oil fruits. (more…)

Losing weight is easier when there’s money involved, according to U.S. researchers, the realization of rewards programs for weight loss, with money involved, is a powerful incentive to lose weight, compared with more conventional approaches.

Dr. Kevin Volpp, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was looking for an effective way to treat obesity, a growing problem that has serious health risks.

The researchers say that in many programs for weight loss, people are rewarded for sacrifice to the future, “We wanted to create a reward system but for the present,” said Volpp, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Volpp and colleagues studied two types of incentive programs for weight loss, one was a lottery in which participants are involved and are allowed to collect their winnings if they can target with your weight loss. (more…)

Thus the body mass index (BMI) was calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared, an example would be:

Normal: 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: 25 to 29.9
Obese: Above 30

While these tables can provide a basic guide as to which is a healthy weight for each individual, are usually too limited in taking into account the structure and physical characteristics of each.
