diet nutritionStill unknown the role of diet in the treatment, prevention or the cause of most types of arthritis, although researchers are studying with great interest the role that diet may play in arthritis.

Diet affects certain types of arthritis and related diseases in one or more of the following ways:

* Being overweight can be a cause of osteoarthritis.

* Eating a diet low in calcium or high in alcohol may increase the risk of osteoporosis.

* Overweight and excessive consumption of alcohol and foods with a high content of purines can raise uric acid in the body and increase the likelihood of an attack of gout.

* The intake of foods rich in protein such as sweetbreads (organ meats) and meats with high levels of purine can aggravate gout.

* There are some scientific reasons to believe that diet can affect some types of arthritis. For example:
or Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation.
or Diets with higher content of vitamins D and C may limit the progression of osteoarthritis.
or In a small number of people, food allergies can trigger symptoms of arthritis.

* However, there is insufficient evidence yet to understand whether people with arthritis should take special diets.

The researchers recommend that people with arthritis follow the guidelines for healthy diet. These recommendations include:

* Eat a variety of foods
* Maintain a healthy weight
* Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and cereals
* Reduce consumption of fat, cholesterol, alcohol and salt
* If you decide to try a change in diet, continue your regular treatment program and talk to your doctor.

Other Resources

* Talk to your doctor or nutritionist.
* Brochures and information on specific forms of arthritis so that others can understand the disease

Obesity, When Is Too Much

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There is a fine line between overweight and obesity, however, there is a thin line to separate them. This is why it is important to know the difference especially when it comes to health versus abandonment.

Obesity is a problem of weight compared with overweight. And most people do not see it, I mean, I still think their numbers are ballooning, ‘Only I have to lose some weight. “However, this is not acceptable in all cases. Overweight people need to lose (only) on 10% of their excess weight to return to their normal weight as defined by the standard height of weight charts. People who are considered overweight have reached a high enough weight to qualify as obese. This does not mean, however, are safe from the epidemic, since they are the closest candidate to obesity. All you have to do is win an astonishing 20% more weight than is pronounced as obese. People who are obese have a great excessive amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass. Over weight and obesity are both determined by this calculation commonly called BMI or Body Mass Index. And both conditions, totally the same health problems. The only difference is the degree of intensity. (more…)

Obesity increase the risk of ovarian cancer

ovarian cancer

Women who are obese increase their risk of developing ovarian cancer by 80 percent, according to a comprehensive study of nearly 94,500 women, the hormonal effects linked to overweight responses making them more prevalent.

The relationship was only found in women who had never used hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms.

The weight gain in postmenopausal women leads to increased production of estrogen, which in turn may stimulate growth of ovarian cells and a role in the development of ovarian cancer.

Previous studies have found an increased risk of ovarian cancer occurs among women who used HRT, but in this case the body weight did not seem to take effect.

There is also a link between obesity and increased breast cancer risk in women who have gone through menopause and the two forms of cancer are closely related. (more…)

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Obesity is a health problem of greater growth in the United States. In 2000, 31% of American adults were obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. And those classified as morbidly obese, as Mr. Rosenthal, tripled in number in just a decade. The complications of morbid obesity are not limited only to life-threatening diseases such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, but also receive medical care that is beyond his reach, and so available to others without this weight problem.

The severely obese people do not fit in standard size wheelchairs, chairs in the waiting room, the beds and hospital gowns, or MRI machines, among other difficulties they face. X-rays often can not penetrate his body sufficiently to produce useful images, and give health to their weight.

What Is Obesity?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

ObesityThe medical world describes the cause of obesity as follows: “An increase in body fat (both visceral and non visceral (subcutaneous) requires that energy intake will increase more energy expenditure.” This brief description is followed by a prolonged “however “and is designed for physicians who are trained to understand what is written.

In summary, obesity has many causes, among which are included genetic disorders, gland disorders, hormonal disorders and metabolic disorders, to name a few. Suffice it to say that if you want to find the real reason for their obesity, it will be necessary to consult a doctor.

The general opinion on obesity could also be summarized as: “people who are not great because”, but this is only a popular point of view, trust me I know, I used to be obese. Obesity is an epidemic, a disease of enormous proportions that is spreading rapidly throughout the world.

The extra mass caused by being overweight has many consequences, adding a heavy risk index in the obesity of the person’s chances of survival. Having to heave the extra weight, the individual is also less inclined to be physically active, which launched a vicious circle causing a worsening problem. (more…)
