How to Start Losing Weight

Professor Elio Riboli, from Imperial College London, said: “We were surprised to see that the size of the waist have a powerful effect on people’s health and premature death.

“There are many simple and individual characteristics that may increase a person’s risk of premature death in this measure, regardless of smoking and drinking.”

He added: “The good news is that you do not need an expensive test and wait ages for the result and evaluate this aspect of health is as simple as measuring your hip and waist size. (more…)

Losing weight is easier when we pay for it

Losing weight is easier when there’s money involved, according to U.S. researchers, the realization of rewards programs for weight loss, with money involved, is a powerful incentive to lose weight, compared with more conventional approaches.

Dr. Kevin Volpp, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was looking for an effective way to treat obesity, a growing problem that has serious health risks.

The researchers say that in many programs for weight loss, people are rewarded for sacrifice to the future, “We wanted to create a reward system but for the present,” said Volpp, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Volpp and colleagues studied two types of incentive programs for weight loss, one was a lottery in which participants are involved and are allowed to collect their winnings if they can target with your weight loss. (more…)

In the method of a deposit contract, where participants invest a small amount of your own money, they would lose at the end of the month if not achieved their goals, this group also would have a bonus if they met their goal.

“The only thing is that only receive their reward at the end of the month if their weight was below the stated goal for the month,” said Volpp.

Control groups all had a goal to lose 16 pounds (7.26 kg) after four months and people with the incentive lost much more weight than those who had paid for their efforts, reaching half of the participants in each group meeting.

People in the lottery program earned a total of $ 378.49 and lost about 13 pounds (5.9 kg), while people who participated in the deposit system was $ 272.80 and the loss was 14 pounds (6.35 kg). (more…)

Obesity is a health problem of greater growth in the United States. In 2000, 31% of American adults were obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. And those classified as morbidly obese, as Mr. Rosenthal, tripled in number in just a decade. The complications of morbid obesity are not limited only to life-threatening diseases such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, but also receive medical care that is beyond his reach, and so available to others without this weight problem.

The severely obese people do not fit in standard size wheelchairs, chairs in the waiting room, the beds and hospital gowns, or MRI machines, among other difficulties they face. X-rays often can not penetrate his body sufficiently to produce useful images, and give health to their weight.

Obesity and a bad omen for elderly women

Obese women reach middle age can live up to 70 years but are far from being as healthy as women who maintain a healthy balance in their lives, according to U.S. researchers.

Thus, the study found that women were gaining weight since age 18, ended in the worst shape, the researchers said.

Most had some kind of physical or mental, more than a third had both chronic diseases and physical or mental limitations.

“As more and more Americans who survive to older ages and at the same time, gain weight, our results could be particularly important with regard to public health policy and clinical merit further investigation and confirmation in additional studies, researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal.
